Shelby was found after Hurricane Michael in Florida’s Panhandle and taken to a shelter. From there, her journey led her to a rescue in Georgia and eventually to a foster home in New Port Richey. When we met her, it was love at first sight, even though she was a bit shy at first.
Her fosters suggested adding “Mustang” to her name because her incredible speed reminded them of a Shelby Mustang. Seven years later, she still runs with that same power and joy. She remains uneasy during thunderstorms and fireworks, but with gentle reassurance and love, she always settles and feels safe again.
Over the years, she has welcomed several other Labs we’ve adopted into our home, though none of them have ever been able to keep up with her in the yard. Like a true Lab, she follows us from room to room, always wanting to be close.
We currently have just one other dog—much bigger than she is—but there’s no question that Shelby Mustang is the one in charge.
